Learn How To Play Poker: Video Poker

The odds are against you when you are playing video poker. The odds are pretty much stacked in favor of the house on all machine and table games in casinos. This is why casinos are so large and luxurious. If the odds were stacked against the casino, the casinos would be shacks and everyone walking out of the casino would be wealthy.

You can have a lot of fun playing video poker, however. As long as you control your spending, you can not only have fun, but make some money. Although video poker is a game that relies a lot on luck of the spin, there is a certain strategy to this game as you have to actually toss away cards.

When playing video poker and you are dealt a hand, take a good look at the hand. The first rule of thumb is to never, ever break up a pair. Some people will break up a pair to go for the straight flush, the ultimate win in video poker, unless you are playing with wild cards. This is a gutsy move, and if you have tossed a quarter into the machine, you can go for it for fun. But the cold reality of the game is that the odds are very much against you getting a straight flush on a video poker machine or any other poker game.

Stay away from the Jacks or Better machines. Chances are that you may make more money playing on these machines, but that the odds of winning are less. You should also stay away from the "big money" poker machines that promise huge jackpots. Odds are against you. Stick with the games that allow you to win a little for a pair or above.

After playing a video poker machine for a few minutes, you can get the feel of the machine. Once you hit, chances are that you are not going to hit again for awhile. Video poker machines pay out about a twenty five percent of the time. This means that for each quarter you put in to the machine, you will win once every four times. And the wins are usually a break even win.

Set a limit as to how much money you want to play on each machine. Hit the machine about twelve times before quitting. If you hit big during those 12 times, quit while you are ahead. The concept of introducing poker machines is set on the mindset that many people feel that they "deserve" to win if they have invested enough money into a machine. Yes, if you sit there all day and continue to invest money into a machine, you have a good chance of hitting. But how much are you going to win and is it going to cover your losses? And can you really afford to take that chance? After all, you never know if the machine has just hit.

There is no rhyme or reason to video poker machines. Do not toss away pairs in pursuit of the big hand, play for only a short period of time, never gamble more than you can afford to lose and if and when you win a good jackpot, take your winnings and walk away.
